Dear Readers,
It’s now the second day that I have been working on the draft for this week’s post. Unfortunately, it is not ready for publication. Somehow, this week’s plan revolves around capturing the awe of David Graeber’s vision of a human(e) economy.
I am referring to his journal article On Social Currencies and Human Economies: Some Notes on the Violence of Equivalence published in 2012. I highly recommend that you read at least the introduction and the next section: the matter of debt. I was surprised to read:
what he thinks a human(e) economy looks like
how it could be operationalised
The more I sit with the material, the more in awe I am of his proposal. This was something that had not been clearly articulated in the first four chapters of Debt. I thought this article was a good thoughtful pause to dive deeper into his head and how his humane formula is supported in ethnographic and historical literature.
I highly encourage you to read the first four pages and think about his mind-bending economic theory. If you need access to the article, send me a message and I can forward you a copy.
There are days that I have to surrender to slow thinking.
Warmly,
Melanie
P.S. I put together a library series set of books to read for this trip. It pretty much sums up my state nowadays.
